Bujinkan Steals the Spotlight at the South West Martial Arts & Wellbeing Show

The South West Martial Arts & Wellbeing Show made a triumphant return this year at Thornbury Leisure Centre, marking its first edition since the pandemic. The showcase was a massive success, attracting a wide range of martial artists, enthusiasts, and fans. It offered a thrilling mix of martial arts displays, workshops, interviews, and vendor stalls, making it an unmissable event for the local martial arts community.

The event brought together a variety of martial arts disciplines, from traditional styles like kung fu and kempo karate to mixed martial arts (MMA) and even screen fighting. Special guests included actors Mark Strange and Lee Charles, who were on hand for autograph signings and stage interviews, adding star power to the day's excitement.

Among the standout moments of the event was a breathtaking demonstration by the Inyo Dojo, showcasing the rich traditions of the Bujinkan. The crowd was treated to an impressive display with practitioners wielding swords, spears, wooden staffs, and even shuriken. Inyo Dojo, which teaches traditional Japanese combat from the era of the ninja and samurai, offered a compelling glimpse into this ancient system of both armed and unarmed combat.

Despite limited preparation time due to the team's varied work schedules and geography, the performance was well-executed and widely praised. Mike from South Wales, a new member of the dojo, reflected on the experience, saying,

“It’s a real honour to come and represent the dojo.”

In addition to the demonstration, Inyo Dojo's workshop drew a large crowd, with interest so high that it had to be relocated to a larger space. The session, led by Raj Bhakerd, a seasoned Bujinkan instructor with over 30 years of experience, introduced participants to core techniques like sword drawing, rolling, throwing, and grappling. Bhakerd's approachable teaching style and deep knowledge made the workshop accessible and enjoyable for martial artists of all backgrounds.

Louise, a karate black belt from Bristol who attended the workshop, was particularly impressed by Bhakerd's instruction, especially his integration of the bokken (wooden practice sword) into groundwork and throws. She commented, "He made everyone feel at ease. A couple of things he brought up were new to me, especially the bokken work. I liked how he incorporated that into the groundwork and throws. Some of the modifications he made… to adapt to people’s injuries… that was useful. I can definitely take away some of the learning from it."

With its combination of high-level performances, hands-on workshops, and the sense of community, the South West Martial Arts & Wellbeing Show has solidified itself as a must-attend event for martial arts enthusiasts. Plans for the next event have already been confirmed, with the date set for September 20, 2025, once again at Thornbury Leisure Centre.

As the event grows in scope and popularity, next year promises to be an even bigger celebration of martial arts, offering more opportunities for practitioners to learn, connect, and share their passion.
