Remembering Tetsuzan Kuroda: A Martial Arts Legend

The martial arts world mourns the loss of a true legend as Tetsuzan Kuroda, a renowned Japanese martial artist, has died at the age of 73. Born in 1950 in Saitama Prefecture, Japan, Kuroda Sensei's journey in martial arts began in his early childhood under the tutelage of his grandfather, Yasuji Kuroda, and his father, Shigeki Kuroda.

A master of multiple disciplines, Kuroda Sensei's legacy is deeply rooted in the traditions of his family's martial arts system, which he diligently preserved and advanced throughout his lifetime. At Shinbukan Kuroda Dojo, he imparted his knowledge and expertise in four distinct styles of martial arts: Komagawa Kaishin-ryu Kenjutsu, Tamiya-ryu Iaijutsu, Shishin Takuma-ryu Jujutsu, and Tsubaki Kotengu-ryu Bojutsu.

Kuroda Sensei's unparalleled skill and dedication earned him the prestigious title of Hanshi Hachidan in Kobudo from the Dai Nippon Butokukai at the young age of twenty, setting a national record in Japan. As the fifteenth Soke, or headmaster, of his family's tradition, he was renowned for his mastery of "Disappearing" or "Hidden Movements," which captivated and inspired martial artists worldwide.

In 2022, Kuroda Sensei was compelled to retire from active teaching due to declining health, marking the end of an era in the martial arts community. However, his legacy continues through his son, Kuroda Yasumasa Sensei, who succeeded him as the sixteenth Soke of Shinbukan Kuroda Bujutsu two years ago.

The martial arts world pays tribute to Kuroda Sensei's unparalleled contributions:

Yari No Hanzo Budo Shop: "One of the great sword masters of this generation. May he rest in peace."

Léo Tamaki: "His teachings have been an invaluable part of my journey."

The Sun’s Shadow Documentary: "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Kuroda Tetsuzan Sensei. His remarkable technique and methodology of swordsmanship inspired many. Our heartfelt condolences to the Kuroda family and his students."

Lloyd Robrecht: "I was fortunate to train with him during my time in Japan. Very few can match his level of skill. This is a great loss."

As we bid farewell to Tetsuzan Kuroda Sensei, we honor his legacy and the indelible mark he left on the martial arts world. His teachings will continue to inspire and guide generations of practitioners, ensuring that his spirit lives on in every dojo and every sword stroke.
