Togakushi Ninja Symposium

In the heartland where the secrets of ninjutsu have been whispered through the ages, Togakushi hosted a captivating symposium dedicated to the enigmatic world of the shinobi.

On Saturday, February 3rd, 2024, the Togakushi Tourist Information Centre became the stage for a day of exploration led by Bujinkan master Hiroshi Nagase. Renowned for his expertise, Nagase Sensei, who initiated his journey into the art of the ninja in 1980, demonstrated the intricate techniques of shuriken—a weapon synonymous with the legendary shadow warriors. His profound dedication to the craft led him to establish his own dojo just nine years into his training.

The symposium's second segment was an engaging panel discussion featuring a lineup of distinguished speakers. Among them is Michael Perrin, a respected American university lecturer, offering unique insights into the historical context of the shinobi arts. Joining the discourse was Kazuho Matsuhashi, representing the Shinobi-Kai, and Matsukaze Iyohisa—a 14th-generation descendant of the ninjas who served the Sanada family.

Matsukaze Iyohisa's journey is a testament to the enduring legacy of ninjutsu. From a tender age, he immersed himself in the traditional Koyo military method, passed down through generations within the Takeda family. Later, under the guidance of the Koyo-ryu Warita family and the Moriya family, he delved into the secrets of ninjutsu. Currently, he pursues the study of "nindo" and diverse military methods from the Koka-ryu under the esteemed guidance of Kawakami Jinichi.

The Togakushi Ninja Symposium was an illuminating day where martial arts enthusiasts, academics, and aficionados alike unravelled the mysteries of the shinobi arts. See highlights from the event in the video below.
