Sugino Sensei Documentary

A new documentary offers a glimpse into the life and teachings of Yukihiro Sugino Sensei, the esteemed head teacher of the Sugino Dojo in Kawasaki, Japan. This captivating film traces Sugino Sensei's lifelong journey in the traditional Japanese martial art of Tenshin Shōden Katori Shintō-ryū, from his early childhood training to his present-day leadership and aspirations for the future.

A Legacy of Martial Excellence

Tenshin Shōden Katori Shintō-ryū is one of Japan's oldest and most comprehensive martial systems. Founded by Iizasa Ienao in the 15th century near Katori Shrine in Chiba Prefecture, this esteemed tradition has stood the test of time. Unlike modern martial arts that focus on specific techniques, Katori Shintō-ryū encompasses a broad range of combat skills, with a primary emphasis on kenjutsu (swordsmanship), while also incorporating other weapons such as the bo staff and naginata.

Yukihiro Sugino inherited the dojo from his father, the legendary Yoshio Sugino, who was introduced to Katori Shintō-ryū in 1927 by Jigoro Kano, the founder of judo. Yoshio Sugino went on to study with aikido's founder Morihei Ueshiba and eventually gained teaching licenses in multiple disciplines. Following in his father's footsteps, Yukihiro Sugino began his training at the tender age of three, alongside his brothers, under strict yet nurturing guidance.

Dedication to Fundamentals

Throughout the documentary, Yukihiro Sugino's commitment to preserving the essence of Katori Shintō-ryū shines through. He emphasizes the importance of mastering the fundamentals, stating, "The most important thing is to always return to the basics." This focus on foundational skills ensures that practitioners develop the proper techniques essential to the art's integrity and longevity.

His son, Sugino Hideo, recalls the intensity of his father's training, describing it as both strict and compassionate. Though he often found the training challenging, Yukihiro Sugino's patience and kindness helped him understand the deeper meaning behind each movement.

A Global Community

The documentary also highlights the international appeal of Katori Shintō-ryū, featuring students from around the world who travel to the Sugino Dojo to train under Yukihiro Sugino's expert instruction. Among them is Michael Reinhardt, a dedicated practitioner who has studied the art for nearly two decades, twelve of which have been in Japan. Reinhardt emphasizes Sugino Sensei's insistence on perfecting the basics, particularly Maki-Uchi and kamae.

Katori Shintō-ryū has a thriving global community, with students in Europe, North America, and Australia, all united by their passion for this ancient martial tradition.

Ensuring the Future of the Art

As the documentary unfolds, it becomes clear that Yukihiro Sugino's greatest mission is to ensure the survival of Katori Shintō-ryū for future generations. His two sons are actively involved in the art, continuing its nearly 600-year-old legacy. Through his teachings, Sugino Sensei not only imparts technical skills but also instills the core values of discipline, respect, and having a "good heart."
